Michelle and Ryan knew from the start they didn’t want anything that felt overly posed or rushed. They had already booked me for their Seattle wedding, but when it came to their engagement photos, they wanted an adventure in the glorious Washington mountains.

So instead of a traditional one-hour engagement session, we planned a full day in the mountains—hiking, exploring, and bringing their wedding attire along for the ride. Not quite a Mount Baker elopement, but definitely inspired by the same vibe.

While this beautiful day is officially an engagement or all-day bridal session rather than an elopement, we planned and timed everything in the same way, planning gorgeous stops along the way with plenty of down time for the couple to enjoy the view and each other’s company.

They’re both avid hikers, and they built so much of their relationship on long trails across Washington. This day felt like a natural extension of that—just with a camera tagging along, documenting every sentimental glance and beautiful view along the way.

Starting Slow at Artist Point

We met at Artist Point in the Mount Baker Wilderness, one of those places that feels expansive the second you arrive. No long approach needed—just step out of the car and you’re surrounded by peaks.

We planned their timeline very intentionally so that nothing felt rushed and we had plenty of time to stop along the way. Our first stop was the overlook toward Ptarmigan Ridge, with Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan both showing off in the sky above these two as they skipped and goofed off on the trail. Definitely made for some pretty epic Washington engagement photos before the wedding attire came out to play!

Iceberg Lake Bridal Photos & Picnic

From there, we made our way toward Iceberg Lake, taking our time along the trail. It’s easy to see why it’s such a favorite for a Chain Lakes engagement session. You get a little bit of everything—open views, alpine lakes, and plenty of space to just wander and take it in.

At the lake, Michelle and Ryan changed into their wedding attire, which always feels a little surreal in a setting like that. One minute you’re hiking, the next you’re watching a couple dressed for their wedding day sitting beside alpine water.

After some sentimental photos in their wedding attire and climbing on giant boulders for even more breathtaking views, they shared a picnic and champagne, tucked into the landscape with no distractions. It was quiet, simple, and honestly one of my favorite parts of the day.

PNW Bridal Photos in the Best Light

We continued on to Herman Saddle as the light began to change. That late afternoon glow started to settle in, softening everything around us.

This stretch gave us some of the most natural PNW bridal photos—nothing forced, just movement, wind, and light working together. The way the sun filtered through Michelle’s dress made everything feel a little extra cinematic.

These two had previously decided they loved the first three quarters of this hike the most, so after a lot of amazing photo moments at Herman’s Saddle, we doubled back instead of continuing the full loop. Having the flexibility to adjust like that is one of the biggest perks of planning a day like this.

Golden Hour Into Blue Hour at Mount Baker

As the sun dropped lower, Mount Baker took center stage. The whole landscape lit up in that warm, end-of-day glow. Some of my favorite photos of the day!

And then came blue hour.

Mount Shuksan became the backdrop as everything cooled down into soft blues and shadows. Michelle and Ryan ran around, laughing, completely in their own world—creating the kind of images I always hope for as a Washington adventure elopement photographer.

Quick Note on Leave No Trace

Throughout the entire day, we stayed on trail, on dirt, or on rocks. The open, untouched feel in their photos comes down to angles and perspective rather than stepping into fragile terrain.

It’s always possible to create something that looks wild and free while still respecting the landscape.

Ending the Day on the Trail

To crown the day in a simple and delicious way, Michelle and Ryan found wild blueberries growing along the trail and stopped to snack for a bit. It felt like such a simple and perfect ending to the day.

By the time we made it back to the parking lot, we had spent eight full hours hiking, exploring, and documenting everything as it unfolded, and I wouldn’t change a single moment.
