A Spring Yakima Wedding at the Yakima Area Arboretum | Sophia & Joshua

There’s something really special about a spring Yakima wedding, especially when it takes place at the Yakima Area Arboretum. Sophia and Joshua were married on April 25, 2026, surrounded by family, friends, blooming gardens, and the kind of quiet moments that stick with you long after the day is over.

The Yakima Area Arboretum is a beautiful place for a wedding in any season, but spring brings a little extra magic. Sophia had hoped for colorful spring blossoms throughout the property, and while many of the blooms had already come and gone, we were still able to find some gorgeous white blossoms that made the perfect backdrop for portraits.

One of my favorite parts of the day was seeing Joshua and Sophia chauffeured around the property on a golf cart. The arboretum is huge, and Sophia’s brother-in-law spent much of the day driving us from one beautiful location to another. It made exploring the grounds easy and gave us access to so many different spots for photos throughout the day.

Sweet Vows and a Meaningful Handfasting Ceremony

Sophia and Joshua’s ceremony was packed with emotion from beginning to end. When it came time to exchange vows, they both struggled to hold back tears. There were plenty of happy tears from guests, too.

One of the most meaningful parts of the ceremony was their handfasting ritual. Sophia had actually made the handfasting cord herself using four woven strands. Even more special, she incorporated a bracelet that the two had found by chance on one of their very first dates together.

As their hands were tied together, both of them became emotional. They stood there looking into each other’s eyes, taking deep breaths together while Joshua gently guided Sophia through the moment. They whispered quietly to one another at the altar, completely focused on each other while everyone else faded into the background. It was one of those moments where nobody needed to say anything. We all just watched and let them have that space together.

Adding to the emotion, the handfasting took place while members of a string quartet performed music from The Princess Bride. Sophia’s mother plays in the string quartet herself (though not on this day), and the other musicians played during the ceremony. Hearing that familiar melody while watching these two share such an intimate moment made it unforgettable.

Family at the Heart of the Day

One thing that stood out throughout this Yakima wedding was how deeply connected Sophia and Joshua are to their family.

Their adorable little niece may have stolen the show more than once. She was all smiles for practically the entire day and had everyone wrapped around her finger.

It was also incredibly meaningful to see four of their grandparents present to celebrate with them. Having multiple generations gathered together in one place always feels special, and it was clear how much it meant to Sophia and Joshua to have them there.

Later in the evening, Sophia shared a full father-daughter dance with her dad. It was a sweet moment on its own, but what really caught my attention was seeing both mothers standing together watching and crying from the sidelines. I was able to capture a photo of that moment, and it remains one of my favorites from the day.

Purple Blossoms

Later, we stepped behind the venue for their marriage license signing and stumbled upon something unexpected: beautiful purple flowering trees. Since purple is the couple’s favorite color, it felt like a lucky find. We spent some time taking additional portraits beneath the blooms, and some of my favorite photos from the day came from those few spontaneous minutes of wandering around together.

Tacos, Cheesecake, and a Private Cake Cutting

Not every wedding tradition has to happen in front of a crowd.

Sophia and Joshua chose to have a private cake cutting in the kitchen, which ended up being one of the funniest parts of the day. They shared cheesecake instead of traditional wedding cake and took a few quiet moments together away from the reception.

They were also incredibly thoughtful and made sure I got to eat right after they did, which is always appreciated on a wedding day since it means I can get back to capturing candids as quickly as possible. Oh, and the taco buffet from Cascade Catering was fantastic.

A Dance Floor Full of Swing Dancers

After their first dance, Sophia and Joshua put their own spin on a classic anniversary dance.

Instead of gradually asking couples to leave the dance floor, they did the reverse. They started by inviting couples who had been together for one year. Then five years. Then more and more couples joined until eventually the entire dance floor was packed.

It was the perfect setup for a crowd that absolutely loved dancing.

Both Sophia and Joshua are swing dancers, and many of their friends are as well. Once the formal dances wrapped up, the dance floor came alive. Everywhere you looked, people were spinning, twirling, and having the best time.

Some of my favorite reception photos happened later in the evening when the lights were twinkling overhead and Sophia and Joshua thought nobody was paying attention. Between songs, they would steal little moments together on the dance floor, smiling at each other and soaking it all in.

A Wedding Filled With Genuine Moments

What I loved most about this Yakima Area Arboretum wedding wasn’t any single detail. It was the way Sophia and Joshua moved through the day together.

Whether they were tearing up during their vows, taking deep breaths during their handfasting ceremony, sprinting away after the ceremony, or sharing quiet moments on the dance floor, they stayed completely present with each other.

The Yakima Area Arboretum gave them a beautiful backdrop, but it was the people around them—their family, friends, grandparents, musicians, dancers, and one very smiley niece—that made the day feel so full of life.
