A Seattle Boat Elopement That Felt Like Home | Jenn & Doug’s Intimate Elopement on the Water

I first met Jenn when she hired me for her son’s wedding a few years ago. It was one of those special weddings that sticks in your mind forever, with a sunset that will stay with me as a core memory until the end of time and a group of people who instantly felt like family. So, you can only imagine how ecstatic I was when Jenn reached out to book me for her own wedding to an amazing man who adores her!

Jenn and Doug planned a Seattle boat elopement with just five people total, keeping things intentionally small and focused on what mattered most to them. The whole adventure felt relaxed and meaningful—like being invited into something really genuine rather than watching a production unfold.

From the very beginning, it was clear this day was about connection—between them, and with their families. Every wedding has its own energy, and this one felt especially personal in the best way.

An Unintentional First Look on the Docks

There wasn’t supposed to be a formal first look, but sometimes the best moments aren’t planned.

Jenn and Doug ended up seeing each other on the docks before boarding the boat, and the second it happened, everything softened. No big buildup—just the two of them with tears welling up in their eyes as Jenn walked to the boat.

It set the tone for the entire day: relaxed, genuine, and full of those quiet, meaningful in-between moments.

Getting Married on the Water

Once we boarded, we sailed out onto the Puget Sound just outside of Seattle.

The ceremony took place right there on the groom’s boat and was officiated by a dear friend, which made every part of it feel even more personal. Their vows reflected that too. They were thoughtful, emotional, and rooted in the miracle of finding each other when they never expected this kind of love.

With the space on the boat being pretty compact, I found myself leaning over the edge at one point to get the shot (fully committed, obviously), and shoutout to Jenn’s son for quietly spotting me just in case.

They also included a sand ceremony, which felt so fitting with the water surrounding us.

The Most “Them” First Moment

After the ceremony, they had a very “them” first moment: fishing together! I’ve never seen this at any other celebration!

To give them some space, the rest of the part headed below deck while we took their couple’s photos, and they shared a quiet first dance right there on the boat.

It was one of those rare pockets of time that felt completely unfiltered. The way they look at each other says everything. There’s so much joy there, but also this steady kind of gratitude—like they both know how meaningful it is to have found each other.

Getting to witness and document that is something I’ll never take for granted.

Back at the Docks: Family & Meaningful Traditions

When we made our way back to the docks, the focus shifted back to family.

Both Jenn and Doug had one of their sons there, which added another layer of meaning to the day. They shared gifts with them—quiet, intentional moments that felt just as important as everything that came before.

And instead of “jumping the broom,” they made it their own and “jumped the oar,” another small detail that made the day uniquely theirs.

Why I Love Being an Intimate Elopement Photographer

There’s something so special about being invited into a day like this. When the only other people invited were their two sons and one of Doug’s oldest friends, to call it an honor would be a wild understatement.
